Reflections on Summer and the Season Ahead
Closing Out the Summer
Another summer is drawing to a close, and with it comes a chance to pause, reflect, and
prepare for the busy season ahead. While the weather did not always cooperate this
year, leaving many of us wishing for more warm days, we are fortunate to now enjoy
some sunshine as families prepare for the return to school. There is always a unique
energy in the air at this time of year—a blend of relief, anticipation, and renewed focus.
Supporting One Another
This summer has been marked not only by activity but also by sorrow. The Hotte family
has faced devastating news, and my heart goes out to them during this incredibly
difficult time. Tragedy of this nature reminds us of the importance of standing together
as a community. My hope is that the Hottes feel surrounded by support and love,
knowing that they do not walk this path alone. Strength of a community often lies in its ability to lift up those who are
hurting.
School and Infrastructure Updates
The start of a school year is always a time of change, and this year is no exception. We
are pleased to welcome Sara Seacrest as the new Kindergarten and Grade 1 teacher.
New beginnings bring new energy, and I am confident she will make a meaningful
contribution to our children’s education.
At the same time, Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) has completed substantial roof
repairs at the school—an essential investment to ensure both safety and long-term
stability. In addition, a new disability ramp has been installed, an important step toward
accessibility and inclusivity. Small changes such as these make a significant difference
in ensuring that every member of our community feels welcome and supported.
Community Challenges
Yet, while we celebrate these improvements, we must also confront some of the more
difficult realities facing our town. In recent months, several overdoses have occurred,
casting a heavy shadow over the summer. It is deeply troubling to see the toll that drugs
continue to take on our community.
Addressing these challenges will require not only vigilance but also compassion. As
friends, neighbors, and family members, we each have a role to play in looking out for
one another and supporting healthier choices. This is not a problem that can be solved
overnight, but by standing together, we can take steps to keep our loved ones safe and
foster a stronger, healthier town.
Council and Civic Engagement
Another area of focus as we move into fall is the upcoming race for council seats. It is
encouraging to see so many citizens step forward with a genuine desire to serve. True
leadership should always be about advancing the growth and well-being of the town, not
about furthering personal agendas.
Serving on council is a responsibility that demands vision, accountability, and
collaboration. The best outcomes for our community will come when leaders are able to
set aside individual interests and instead focus on the bigger picture—creating
opportunities for growth, addressing challenges head-on, and ensuring a vibrant future
for all residents.
Upcoming Events
Community life is built not just on challenges and governance, but also on opportunities
to gather, celebrate, and enjoy one another’s company. Several upcoming events offer
exactly that:
August 31 – Chili Cook-Off, part of the Alberta Day celebrations. A chance to come
together, enjoy some food, and showcase our community spirit.
September 3 – Town Council Meeting. I strongly encourage residents to attend; these
meetings provide an invaluable opportunity to better understand how decisions are
made and to have your voice heard.
September 13 – Community Baseball Tournament. A chance to celebrate local talent,
enjoy some friendly competition, and connect with neighbors.
